BRAVE NEW WORLD
Open G tuning – Key of D
I have got a story though it’s really nothing new
I have squandered my resistance, so I know what I must do
Working any job that comes my way
Working any job that doesn’t pay
2.
Yes I take my pleasures where I find them when I can
Cuz there’s only so much pleasure offered to a working man
Every day’s the same as that just past
Hoping every day will be the last
CHORUS
Why do I pray for the end of the day?
Why do I stay the same way as I started?
Am I to blame when tomorrow’s the same?
Who knows? Sure not me.
3.
I show up to work; nothing more, and nothing less
How I’m s’pposed to live on that is anybody’s guess
(They said) “How can you ask for more you got your nerve.
Folks like you just get what you deserve.”
4.
My folks were dignified, and we had pride but we were poor
Somehow I gave my children less than what I had before
Every time the ink goes in their skin
They’re crying to the world “I am somebody!”
CHORUS
INSTRUMENTAL BRIDGE
5.
Once upon a time and long ago and far away
I hear people stuck together and got things to go their way
Now I know what everybody sees
(There’s) no place at the table left for me
6.
Now you’ve heard my story, and I do believe it’s true
(When you’ve got) nothing left to lose there’s really nothing you can’t do
Now I see what everybody knows
Silence really like a cancer grows
CHORUS
Why do I pray for the end of the day?
Why do I stay the same way as I started?
Am I to blame when tomorrow’s the same?
Who knows? Sure not me
Who can I blame when tomorrow’s the same?
No one, no one but me
Am I to blame when tomorrow’s the same?
No one knows that but me

I Shall Be Free No. 709

|

I SHALL BE FREE No. 709
KEY OF E Open G tuning
1.
Now I am just a regular guy
No more to me than meets the eye
I got a white guy’s house with a white guy’s yard
All my neighbors are white and we work real hard
I live in a gated community
I like it for the security
You come to the gate they give me a page
The guardhouse guy gets minimum wage
I lock all the windows, deadbolt the door
Set the alarm and enjoy my decor
It’s a place where I can feel really free
Where everyone is just like me
Nice mix of people, some I adore
Some I don’t like, but nobody’s poor
2.
I’ve got an 85 inch flat screen TV
In every room in my house you see
300 channels, it’s quite an array
I leave ‘em all tuned to Fox News every day
I confess that I like it, it scares me to death
With its endless parade of zombie shibboleths
I feel their indignity, love how they holler
It’s your best entertainment bang for the dollar
You want to tell me that that stuff isn’t true
But I know that it is so the joke is on you!
3.
Now I’m Libertarian to a degree
I think everybody should be free
To get for themselves and be self-reliant
You think you don’t like it just wait till you try it!
You earn it you’ll keep it, isn’t that fair?
The fittest survive and nobody shares
Nothing has ever been handed to me
And we’ve all got the same opportunity
The only thing stopping you, holding you in
Is the color of your culture not the color of your skin
Hard work, faith, dedication and luck
What more do you need to be making a buck?
4.
We’re in a new enlightened era for sure
Where nobody must check their guns at the door
With freedom so real you can just about taste it
If anything gets in your way you just waste it
Everyone must have the right to protection
You gotta protect yourself from those protectin’
Themselves from the ones who won’t protect themselves at all
Wait, I see a dark shadow at the end of the hall
I’m comin’ out blastin’ hope I hit someone
Thank god I had the good sense to buy this gun
5.
So that’s my story – and I’ve had it all wrong
There ain’t no money in singing a song
I’m gonna run for office “Vote for me!”
I’ll tell ya how it’s gonna be
If you ask for food stamps you’re gonna get tested
Pee in the cup or we’ll have you arrested.
Don’t have your papers? Then you’ll be deported
Pregnant in trouble? It won’t be aborted
I’m only carrying out the will of the master
Listen to me or you flirt with disaster
Do what I say and someday you’ll be free
Of everything except….people like me!

SEVEN DAYS A WEEK
Key of G Open G tuning
Love is won the hard way
It matters how you play
Love is won the wrong way
It matters what you say
Love is won the long way
A little every day, each day
Seven days a week
2).
Love is such a hard game
It matters what you keep
Love is like a card game
You read ‘em and you weep
Love is such an odd game
That I can’t hardly sleep, oh no
BRIDGE
She just opened my eyes
I got a surprise
When she made me see
She’s got hold of my mind
It’s so unkind what’s she’s doin’ to me
3).
Love did me the wrong way
And got me by degrees
Love hit me a strong way
I’m beggin’ darlin’ please
Love took me a long way
It brought me to my knees, oh no
Seven days a week
BRIDGE
4).
Love is such a hard game
It matters what you keep
Love is like a card game
You read ‘em and you weep
Love is such an odd game
That I can’t hardly sleep, oh no
That I can’t hardly sleep, oh no

What We're Afraid Of
03:49
|
|||
WHAT WE’RE AFRAID OF
Key of C Open G tuning
When you’re a child and wake up everyday
To a big world that wishes you’d just go away
Does it fill you with sadness and pain?
And make you ashamed of your name?
When you’re a man feeling under attack
Simply for walking and talking while back
In the day they said so much was gained
Can you keep your emotions contained?
CHORUS
When do we stop building fences?
And come to our senses?
We show what we’re made of by what we’re afraid of.
People aren’t problems you don’t fix or solve them
And everything’s hard for the change
2.
When you are born welcomed into the club
Is it easy to feel that you’re better than some?
Do you find you can live with the stain?
When you haven’t a cause to complain?
When you are old do you just close your eyes
To a future without you ya don’t recognize?
Do you fight to keep the world all your own?
When it’s the only world you’ve known?
CHORUS
When do we stop building fences?
And come to our senses?
We show what we’re made of by what we’re afraid of.
People aren’t problems you don’t fix or solve them
And everything’s hard for the change
BRIDGE
One friend looking for another
What friend is good without the other one?
3.
Jesus closed early, he poured out the cup
Cuz the ghost of Huck Finn’s dad just wouldn’t shut up
“It’s too hard to sell mercy and change
When they’re praying you’ll keep things the same.”
Mr. Invisible raised up his hand
Said “There is one thing I don’t understand
If all the people must be free
How much more “people“ must I be?”
CHORUS
When do we stop building fences?
And come to our senses?
You show what you’re made of by what you’re afraid of.
People aren’t problems you don’t fix or solve them
And everything’s hard for the change
One simple notion can put things in motion
And everything’s hard for the change

Talkin' Big Chill Blues

TALKIN’ BIG CHILL BLUES
KEY OF A OPEN G TUNING
CHORUS
Hey – it’s been so good to me
Honey now I’m starting to see
That it’s not all it’s cracked up to be
1.
We marched in the streets and protested the war
Fought racism, sexism – chose to be poor
Tried Buddhism, Zen, TM, LSD
Played guitars in the stars and vowed to stay free
Confounded our elders wanted none of their biz
Something’s happening but they don’t know what it is
2.
Woodstock, Altamont, it comes to a head
Got the riots and the bombings and the four students dead
Heroin, speed, disband and disperse
Nixon gets reelected, man, it couldn’t get worse
You’re either part of the problem or you’re the solution
And don’t put your faith in the old institutions
CHORUS
Hey – it’s been so good to me
Honey I’m beginning to see
That it’s not all it’s cracked up to be
3.
“If I’m not for me then who will be?
And if not now, when?” Well, it’s easy to see
That by 1980 there’s a new set of rules
Now the winner is the guy with the most greater fools
Got a wife, gotta work, so it’s understood
Goodbye “Peace & Love” and hello “Greed Is Good”
4.
Soon I had a Mercedes, next day a McMansion
Now how is that not economic expansion?
Come home late each night, kids already in bed
Look down and my voter card’s all stamped in red
Is it good for the planet? Hell, I dunno
But I’m gettin’ ahead and it’s startin’ to show
CHORUS
Hey – it’s been so good to me
Honey I’m beginning to see
That it’s not all it’s cracked up to be
5.
Hello wife number 2, hello kid number 4
If I worked any more I’d be dead on the floor
It’s winner take all game, don’t be a putz
See how they pay teachers? You’d have to be nuts
To do that for a living, so all praise the Savior
And reward ourselves for our bad behavior
6.
When you hold the door open for guys like us
You’re throwing you’re own future under a bus
But ya held us high as a shining example
‘cause you knew in your hearts you were willing to trample
On your neighbors and friends if it filled up your purse
You’re just pissed that you didn’t think of it first
CHORUS
Hey – it’s been so good to me
Honey I’m beginning to see
That it’s not all it’s cracked up to be
7.
My country has really asked nothing of me
Since June 30, 1973
I’ve plundered its bounties, looted its store
And then had the chutzpah to come back for more
My son’s out of work again and called to discuss
He said “Thanks, old man, you left nothing for us.”
8.
We were bright young kids full of thrills and excitement
Now we’re old, full of pills, under threat of indictment
Can’t step out to see it we’re so deep inside it
All the booze and the antidepressants can’t hide it
You get a mighty big chill right down to your bones
The day you realize that YOU have become Mr. Jones
CHORUS
Babe – you look so good to me
Honey now I’m starting to see
That I’m not all I’m cracked up to be
